A Tribute to Melanie Berzon

with: Tammy Hall Trio, Melanie DeMore, Barbara Dane, The V-Note Ensemble, The Montclair Women's Big Band

After 26 years at KCSM Radio in various positions including Program Director, Operations Director, and co-host of Jazz in the Afternoon, Melanie Berzon is retiring from her full-time job at Jazz 91. Her 46 year career in public broadcasting has graced such prestigious institutions as WGBH (Boston) and KPFA – Pacifica Radio (Berkeley) but it’s her advocacy for women in jazz that has especially brought her recognition.

Melanie has been instrumental in bringing women's voices to the airwaves from coast to coast, culminating in 2016, when she and her sister broadcasters were recognized by Harvard University for their annual International Women's Day Radio Project.

Join us as we salute Melanie Berzon for her tireless work, with a concert featuring the Tammy Hall Trio with Ruth Davies (bass) and Ruthie Price (drums); Melanie DeMore; Barbara Dane; The V-Note Ensemble; and The Montclair Women’s Big Band. Part of the proceeds will benefit KCSM Jazz 91.

The Montclair Women’s Big Band is a Bay Area treasure. Founded in 1997 by veteran trumpeter Ellen Seeling and saxophonist Jean Fineberg, the group is an alliance of some of the region’s most formidable jazz women. Forging a singular blues-drenched sound with a deep Latin pocket and captivating original material, audiences are electrified by the band’s powerhouse ensemble, addictive grooves and inspired solos. This extraordinary swing machine will blow you away!
